Cowan leads Canucks over Lightning
Hockey Betting Lines
03/07/2007 - Vancouver, BC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jeff Cowan scored two goals for the second consecutive game to lead the streaking Vancouver Canucks to a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at GM Place.
Kevin Bieksa and Daniel Sedin both registered a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who have won three straight and eight of their last 10 games overall. Vancouver remained atop the Northwest Division, two points ahead of the Calgary Flames, who were also victorious on Tuesday. Bryan Smolinski added his first goal as a member of the Canucks while Roberto Luongo made 16 saves in the win.
Vinny Lecavalier scored the only goal for Tampa Bay, which has lost two straight and now trails the Atlanta Thrashers by two points for the top spot in the Southeast Division. Johan Holmqvist allowed five goals on 28 shots in the losing effort.
Cowan opened the scoring at 8:44 of the first period. Brendan Morrison carried the puck deep down the right-wing side and, from behind the goal line, passed into the crease for a tap-in by Cowan from in close.
The visitors knotted the contest 6:51 into the middle session on Lecavalier's NHL-leading 43rd goal of the campaign. The Lightning were skating on the power play and Filip Kuba passed across the slot for Lecavalier, who partially whiffed on a one-timer from the right circle. However, the awkward speed of the fluttering shot fooled Luongo and the puck sailed into the top of the cage.
Before the second intermission, Vancouver grabbed a 2-1 lead on Bieska's 11th goal from the top of the crease at 15:19.
The Canucks then came out on fire in the third period and sealed the win with a goal just 21 seconds into the final stanza. The puck squirted free in Tampa's defensive zone before Lightning defensemen Nolan Pratt and Cory Sarich collided while trying to clear the puck. The collision allowed Henrik Sedin to gain control. He skated down the right-wing side and, from near the base of the half-wall, fired a centering pass to his brother Daniel for a redirection goal in front.
Shortly after Canucks forward Jan Bulis misfired on a breakaway attempt, the Canucks made up for it by taking a 4-1 advantage on Smolinski's short-handed tally. Vancouver successfully killed a 5-on-3 Tampa Bay advantage that lasted for nearly a minute and cleared the disc the length of the ice. Holmqvist went behind the net for a routine pass to a nearby defenseman, but he mishandled the puck and turned it over to Smolinski, who banked it home off the netminder from along the goal line at the 6:57 mark.
Cowan's second goal of the game inside the final minute capped the scoring.

Kurt Warner to start, Matt Leinart to watch
Despite the debate that's swirling , Kurt Warner will remain the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, coach Dennis Green said today. The Arizona Cardinals are the +7 point underdog at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com for this Sunday's game.
Green's comment came in a statement released by the team following an ESPN report that Green decided that rookie Matt Leinart would replace Warner as starter for Sunday's game at Atlanta.
"Generally talking about the starting lineup is not something we do," Green told the AP. "However, given the speculation that was out there we want to make it clear. We're disappointed after last week, but we still expect to be a playoff football team and we fully expect Kurt Warner to be the quarterback that leads us. That has not changed."

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.
Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.
According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).
Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.
''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''
Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.
Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.
''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''
Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.
Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.
”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''
The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
